Yippee! Arts Council Funding for Summer School 2010

We've just received fantastic news that our Summer School 2010 has been awarded Grants for the Arts funding from Arts Council England. The Summer School will take place in York from 17th-19th August and will be run in partnership with Out of Character Theatre Company and York St John University.

The event will be a fantastic opportunity for our actors to take part in workshops led by a variety of theatre practitioners and share work with people with similar creative interests. The Summer School will culminate in a collaborative performance from One in Four and Out of Character.

We have an open session coming up on Monday 26th July, 5.15pm - 7.15pm, Room 4, Level 2 of The Carriageworks. If you have direct experience of using mental health services then you are welcome to come along to take part in the workshop and see if you'd be interested in joining us.

There are some places in the group available at the moment, these will go to the people from the waiting list but the list is short so please don't be discouraged!

It's been a busy time for One in Four lately.

As you'll know if you've contacted me to join the theatre company, although we'd love to be able to welcome everyone, we are full at the moment and so have had to resort to a waiting list. We are working on a solution to this problem so please do stick with us and keep in touch.

In the mean time we have an open workshop session coming up on Monday 24th May 5.15-7.15pm @ the Carriageworks - Room 4, Level 2. So if you have direct experience of using mental health services and are interested in joining us please come along to meet the company and take part in a workshop.

One in Four in 2009 - A look back at the year

2009 has been a busy year for One in Four:

We began the year in rehearsal with 'Fairytale of Serendipity' which we performed at the Creative Personalities event in January, for regulars to the Victoria open mic night in February, at Leeds Mind's DeLacey House in March and at Buster's cafe at The Becklin Centre in April. We received some wonderful feedback and encouragement, gained new members and made connections with some great people and organisations who are keen to support our future work.

Then in July we were commissioned by Leeds PFT to create a Forum theatre performance workshop for their AGM and other venues. We performed One in Fourum at the AGM at the end of September, the work stirred up some great debate and was very well received. We appeared on Look North and Sue Baker from the Time to Change campain said that it was the best performance tackling stigma and discrimination around mental ill health she had seen.

Further to this we performed at The Carriageworks on World Mental Health Day and at Touchstone's AGM. Audiences were fantastic, getting involved and showing real enthusiasm for the debate the play and workshop inspired.

So what next in 2010?

We are still taking bookings of One in Fourum and hope for at least 2 more performances of it this year. Also after listening to feedback from our audiences we are hoping to create a new Forum Performance, still tackling stigma and discrimination but hoping to reach new audiences and raise awareness beyond the mental health community.

On Wednesday night we performed 'A Fairy tale of Serendipity' again, despite some cast changes, the performers adapted really well and the audience gave some great feedback.

We have two more performances booked, both will be open to the public:
7pm Wednesday March 18th at Delacey House, Abbey Rd (hosted by MIND)
7pm Tuesday April 7th at Becklin Centre, St James Hospital (hosted by Buster's Cafe open mic night).

Our new performance A Fairy tale of Serendipity along with original poetry, written and performed by members of of the company, will be premiered at the Celebrating Creative Personalities event on 11pm-5pm 30th January at The Carriageworks, Millienium Square, Leeds.

We will be performing upstairs@carriageworks at 2pm.

In Autumn 2008 One in Four received a grant from Awards for All to create a performance challenging stigma and discrimination around mental ill health. The company have spent the Autumn devising for the performance and are now in the final stages of rehearsal.

Performances are planned to take place at Celebrating Creative Personalities, The Carriageworks, Leeds on 30th January. Also at other Leeds venues throughout the Spring; details to follow.
